Iron powders
Australian Metal Powder Supplies Pty Ltd is the sole Australian & New Zealand distributor
for Höganäs AB. Höganäs develops, manufactures and markets iron and
steel powders.
Applications
Component suppliers to the automotive industry use iron powder
to make engine and transmission parts. Instead of melting and casting
iron and then machining the casting, they compact metal powder in
dies to produce finished products. The unit cost is lower, the quality
is more uniform and the process uses much less energy.
Metal powder can also prolong the lifetime of components exposed
to wear. Train wheels, for example, last three times longer if the
rims are coated with a thin facing of metal powders- and the noise
level is 80% lower as well. In addition, metal powder can be used
to change the characteristics of other materials. Plastics, for
example, can be made heavier, or magnetised, or given other metallic
properties with an admixture of metal powder. Even breakfast cereals
can be iron-enriched with very fine powder.
Höganäs products are classified by their application. The six
major applications are as follows:
Höganäs has within its range over 200 distinct grades of powder.
Here are just eight of them:
|
NC100.24
Sponge iron particle at least 100 microns in diameter. The
most widely used grade of powder, with chemical and other
applications.
|
|
316L
Water-atomised steel powder grading 18% Cr, 12% Ni and 2.5%
Mo. For stainless steel components.
|
C100.29
Carbon reduced sponge iron powder, -100 Mesh. Unannealed high density.
|
MH300
Carbon reduced sponge iron powder, -325 Mesh. Annealed.
|
W40.24
Carbon reduced sponge iron powder, 40 Mesh medium density.
|
W40.29
Carbon reduced sponge iron powder, -40 Mesh high density.
|
Iron melting flakes
Flakes of compacted Sponge Iron powder. Based on carbon-reduced Sponge Iron powder, annealed. Approximate size: 15 mm wide, 1.5 - 3 mm thick
High purity and high dissolution rate makes this product very useful as an alternative in stainless steel melts as well as a raw material in manufacturing of chemicals.

AT40.29
Water atomised iron powder, -40 Mesh.
